Why are Conspiracy Therorist So Eager to Out Themselves?
Talking with someone who believes far right nonsense, it is striking how quick they are to throw out their unreality card, letting you know how full of bullshit their line of thinking is from the beginning, and no amount of logic or evidence will sway them because they are already believing in magical consequences and fantasy conclusions.
It reminds me of extremist christian groups pressuring members to convert others. It doesn't convert others but drives wedges between the christian extremists and their more grounded friends and family. Right Wing conspiracy theories drive the same wedge and serve the same purpose.
The right wing scheme is to envelop people in this verisimilitude of reality, and then socially isolate them with their completely unhelpful and actively antisemitic conspiracy theories, and then left alone and having driven friends away, they are plump and vulnerable for the right wing hate machine to suck them up and slot them into the right wing fascist army.
Its painful to be friends with someone sucked into something so profoundly stupid and evil as the Republican Political Party. The stunning lack of moral standards, the fascism, the political campaigns based on othering trans people, the lies about gun control, the fact that Republicans thrive on encouraging terror, fear and violence in America. Republicans want a post-apocalyptic America -- many Republican voters actively clamor for a Race War to create this apocalypse so that an all White society may emerge. Republicans literally want to kill you for not being a conformist.
More immediately, Republican politicians get votes by claiming America is in shocking decay, and encouraging violence (Trump all the time) to make it so. Republicans want Americans to be scared. The famous "terror" GOP rally comes to mind. A great way to keep Americans scared is to encourage more school shootings by intentionally doing nothing effectual to stop them.
The eagerness with which Right Wingers share their conspiracy theories is a symptom of this destructive wedge driving force, crafted by billionaire financed propagandists. Well designed to wreck their community and make their adherents suspicious of actual evidence and eager to believe whatever magical thinking lies the power broker is selling them that day.
I think what annoys me most is the non-sequitur of it. So focused on the banal conspiracy they are it is all that is on their mind and it is something they are eager to proffer. Its a symptom of how caught up in this fantasy they are.
Much of the money for this propaganda comes directly from ultra-wealthy individuals trying to manipulate the world such that they can rule it and diminish the power of voters by swaying some of them to gleefully surrender rights. This is one of the many consequences of not taxing rich people.
